Beware of Decaf Coffee
Did you know that most decaf coffee is decaffeinated using a chemical process? Chemicals used to decaffeinate coffee include methylene chloride and ethyl acetate. This process goes under many names including "water process", "natural process", and "European process", which all sound much nicer than they are. However, there are healthier alternatives if you want to drink decaf. The SWISS Water Process is totally free of chemicals and uses only water to remove the caffeine. When buying decaf coffee, if you make sure that you choose an organic variety, you can be sure chemicals were not used in it's processing. Organic decaf coffee is generally decaffeinated using either the Swiss Water Process, or a process which uses liquid oxygen. It is important to note that decaf coffee is never completely decaffeinated, but the process does remove about 97% of the buzz. |
